CSK Controversies
Below you can see some of the Controversies of CSK
N Srinivasan Controversies (Ownership of N. Srinivasan)
Until September 2008, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regulation, Clause 6.2.4 stated that “No administrator shall have a commercial interest in the matches and events conducted by the BCCI.”
This clause was introduced in 2007 to address concerns that then-BCCI president N. Srinivasan had a conflict of interest due to his ownership of the Chennai Super Kings cricket team.
However, on September 2, 2008, this clause was amended to remove the restriction on administrators having a commercial interest in BCCI events.
This amendment allowed Srinivasan to continue to own the Chennai Super Kings and gave him a clear conflict of interest.
In 2013, Srinivasan was elected president of the International Cricket Council (ICC), raising further concerns about his ability to make unbiased decisions regarding cricketing matters.
2013 Betting Scandal in IPL
Gurunath Meiyappan, the son-in-law of Narayanaswami Srinivasan and a top official in the Indian Premier League (IPL), was arrested by Mumbai police in May 2013 on suspicion of illegal betting.
The arrest came just days after Srinivasan had been elected chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), raising questions about the extent to which the IPL—a multibillion-dollar enterprise is India’s most popular sport—was mired in corruption.
Meiyappan was accused of placing bets on cricket matches and passing information about players to bookmakers.
He denied any wrongdoing, but his arrest led to calls for Srinivasan’s resignation from both the BCCI and the International Cricket Council (ICC).
CSK Suspension From Indian Premier League
Supreme Court of India gave BCCI an ultimatum on 25 March 2014: Suspend Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) from the Indian Premier League (IPL) or face cancellation.
In 2013, both teams were implicated in a spot-fixing scandal. A BCCI committee cleared them of any wrongdoing, but the Supreme Court felt the board could not conduct a fair investigation.
